So apparently, Estée Lauder just gave Double Wear a major make-over. For years, the OG formula was my go-to for everything—concerts, meetings, you name it. It’s the kind of foundation that doesn’t budge, doesn’t cake, and somehow survives 4K cameras. But here we are, 20 years later, with a new version that’s supposed to be lighter, more breathable, and less cakey. Spoiler: It’s not a total win, but it’s not a total fail either.
The new formula swaps out cyclopentasiloxane (a silicone banned in Europe) for a mix of dimethicone and methyl trimethicone. It also ditched water thickeners like xanthan gum in favor of sodium hyaluronate, which hydrates and thickens the texture. The result? A more fluid, spreadable texture that’s supposed to feel like a second skin. But here’s the catch: It’s not as dense as the original, so you’ll need more product to get the same coverage. My friend Emy, who’s been using Double Wear for eight years, did a side-by-side test. “The new one is runnier,” she said. “I had to apply more to get the same level of coverage.” But she’s not mad—she’s just used to the OG’s full-coverage punch.
For me, the new formula is a love-hate thing. I’m not a fan of the matte finish, but it does stay put. I tested it for a day of filming and it didn’t budge, even when I sweat like a raccoon. The pigments are also different—my usual shade 6W1 now reads as 6C1. I’m still figuring out which is better. The brand’s “polymer mesh matrix” tech claims to let the foundation move with your skin, and the “AlgaNiacin” blend supposedly tames oiliness. It’s a bit of a flex, but I’m still leaning toward my trusty skin tints for everyday wear.
Key points: The new formula is lighter and more buildable, but you’ll use more product. Shade matching is trickier now, so test it in-store. And while it’s great for long days, it’s still not my everyday pick.
