While everyone else is fighting for their lives over overpriced cocktails in Mykonos or Paris, you could be living your absolute best life across four different countries without draining your entire savings account. I just got back from 17 days of pure chaos and culture across Romania, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, and Albania, and honestly? It was everything.
The Balkan Itinerary Breakdown
I spent five days in Bucharest exploring Dracula’s castle and the massive Palace of Parliament before heading to Sofia for a four-day stint filled with second-hand shopping and monastery visits. From there, it was a quick hop to Skopje and then three dreamy days in Ohrid, which honestly felt like a fever dream in the best way possible. We finished things off with four days in Tirana, hitting up Bunk’Art 2 and relaxing by Shala River. Moving between these spots was surprisingly easy using FlixBus, and even my longest ride was only six hours. Your money goes much much further in easteurope. Even with flights, hotels, food, and every single day trip included, the whole journey only cost about 2,300 €.

If you want some real hot takes: Sofia was hands down my #1 favorite city, while Skopje unfortunately hit the bottom of my list at #5. Ohrid and Tirana were also top tier, but nothing beat that Bulgarian energy!

For example, Villa Varosh in Ohrid offered views that literally made me never want to leave, and the Rogner Hotel in Tirana is pure luxury. When it comes to activities, I was obsessed with swimming in Lake Ohrid and wandering through the Women’s Market in Bulgaria. If you are a bit of a history nerd like me, seeing the remnants of old communist architecture adds such a unique layer to the trip. While some might say Western Europe is more “beautiful,” the kind people and delicious food here make this region a major winner. It’s basically the ultimate hack for traveling like a queen on a budget.
